Destination: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Saskatoon is centrally located in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada and is situated on the banks of the south Saskatchewan River which is crossed by seven bridges within the city limits. The city is Saskatchewan's largest boasting a population of 206,900 and growing. Saskatoon is often called the "City of Bridges" for its seven river crossings - it is also occasionally referred to as "The Paris of the Prairies", for the same reason). Another, less commonly used nickname is "POW City". POW stands for Potash, Oil, and Wheat. This nickname was popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Saskatchewan grows half of the entire quantity of Canada's major export crops: wheat, oats, barley, rye, flaxseed and canola. Mining is also an important part of the economy. The Saskatoon region is the world's largest exporter of uranium, and nearly two-thirds of the world's recoverable potash reserves are located in the Saskatoon region. This 4-season destination includes attractions like the Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Western Development Museum, Credit Union Centre (formerly Saskatchewan Place) as well as many festivals and events. |
